Cycling falters, but maintains lead
April 14, 2009
Boone, NC -- The ACCC weekend held at Appalachian State University took a turn for the worse for Team Pfeiffer Cycling. The weekend began with a family emergency, a crash, sickness and cold rain in the deep mountains.
For the first time this season Pfeiffer Cycling fell into difficulty from the beginning of the day. The roads were very slippery, the down hills extremely fast and dangerous with the wind gusting over 25 miles per hour.
With so many problems plaguing the team all at once the road race proved to be a daunting test. The opposing teams began attacking on all fronts. The team fought hard and managed to finish 3rd overall for the road race.
Mid afternoon held some hope of better weather for the Individual Time Trial. Due to the very high winds and narrow roads the length of the TT was dropped to only 8 long, painful miles. Pfeiffer Cycling finished in 5th place.
Sunday brought warmer temps, light wind and a sunny flat criterium in Boone. Pulling back into form, all the racers knew what was at stake. Regardless of the events of the day before, all were focused on the crit. The course was a ¾ mile board flat circuit. This would favor the crit specialist of the team. By fighting for good finishes, taking as many prime points in each race the odds of keeping the conference lead was promising. Each race was fast and furious. It was no holds barred and a “take no prisoners” attitude coursed throughout the team. As each race finished hopes were higher that the team would save the day.
By the last race Pfeiffer Cycling finished the crit races 2nd overall. The waiting began as it would be a few hours until final results were posted. The Falcons only lost 16 total points dropping the overall lead to 70 points over second place ASU. Pfeiffer leads ASU by 202, Wake Forest by 214 and Georgetown by 274 points.
The ACCC Conference Championships will be held at Wake Forest April 18-19. The road race and Team Time Trial are scheduled for Saturday, while the final race will take place on Sunday in downtown Winston-Salem. The events began at 8:00 AM and the last race goes off at 12:40 PM.
