Men's golf finishes in first place

Charlotte, NC --The Pfeiffer University men’s golf team edged out Mount Olive College for the 2009 J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament title at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation Tuesday. The Falcons shot a 294 Monday and a 306 Tuesday, completing the ninth annual event at 600.

Mount Olive College finished with a 606, six shots behind Pfeiffer. Anderson (S.C.) University was third (612), while the Wingate University A team was fourth with a 616. Eight schools and nine teams were represented at this year’s event.

Pfeiffer senior Andrew Shiflet (Asheboro, NC) earned medalist honors on the par 72, 6936-yard layout. Shiflet posted a 75 Tuesday to go with his four-under-par 68 from Monday. Shiflet’s 143 score was four strokes better than the field.

Mount Olive senior Pete Skirpstas (Medina, OH) finished second, making a big move with a two-under-par 70 Tuesday. Skirpstas had the best round of the day Tuesday. He completed the two-day event with a 147.

Anderson senior Adam Sheriff (Anderson, SC) posted a one-under-par 71 Tuesday, placing third with a 148. Sheriff and Skirpstas had the only under-par rounds Tuesday. Pfeiffer sophomore Laurence Noott (Worcestershire, England) was one shot back at 149. Noott’s consistency was vital, as he shot 75-74 at the Hargett Memorial.

Mars Hill College senior Nate Lockey (Brantford, Ontario, Canada) earned the final spot on the All-Tournament team by winning a scorecard play-off for fifth place. Lockey was one of four players to post a 151 for the two-day event. Lockey had an even-par 72 Tuesday.

Wingate freshman Braden Jackson (Dallas, NC) also shot a 151, but he lost the scorecard play-off for the last spot on the All-Tournament team. Jackson had a 76 Monday and a 75 Tuesday. Mount Olive sophomore Riley Boyette (Princeton, NC) and Queens University of Charlotte sophomore David Bainbridge also shot 151 at the 2009 Hargett Memorial.

On the team charts, Catawba College finished fifth at 617. The remainder of the field included Queens (618), Lincoln Memorial University (622), Wingate “B” (629) and Mars Hill (641) in the six through nine positions on the team leader board.
