SAAC to host second annual 'Dry Night'

Misenheimer, NC -- The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Pfeiffer will sponsor its second annual 'Dry Night' beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 20. 'Dry Night' is held to promote an evening of substance-free activities and raises awareness about the negative impact of underage drinking and alcohol abuse.

'Dry Night' also demonstrates Pfeiffer's commitment to community outreach and longstanding mission of service, while benefiting a worthy cause - the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The night's activities will include video game tournaments, pie eating contests, dodge ball, a Mr. Pfeiffer University pageant, food and much more.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. in the Merner Gym on the Misenheimer campus. Cost for the event is $5 in advance and $7 the night of the event. All proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish, an organization that has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work.

"This event is an opportunity to unite the campus and community for a good cause while offering a night of substance-free entertainment to students," said Suzie Hinman, one of the event organizers and member of SAAC, a student-led organization dedicated to promoting a positive student-athlete image. "During 'Dry Night' SAAC hopes no alcohol will be consumed and students are encouraged to donate the money they would have spent on alcohol to Make-A-Wish. We also want this event to shed light on the critical issue of underage drinking and substance abuse."

Drinking among college students and other 18-to-24-year-olds has increased since 1998 and contributes to an estimated 1,700 alcohol-related unintentional student deaths per year, according to the latest National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism report. Annually, more than 696,000 students in the same age category are assaulted by another student who was drinking, and more than 97,000 students are victims of alcohol-related sexual assaults.

"The college years represent a period for high risk drinking behaviors and one of the great things about Pfeiffer is the commitment of our students to shape the campus culture into one that is a source of pride," said Daryl Bruner, MA, LPC, NCC, director of counseling services at Pfeiffer. "Dry Night is a great example of our students' awareness of this national trend, and then responding locally to bring about a positive change by helping each other make responsible choices. It is really exciting to see our student-athletes taking the lead for this event."
