Results vs. Belmont Abbey (2009-01-31 00:00:00)

Belmont, NC -- For the second time in a season with one of the wackiest schedules ever created, Pfeiffer University men's basketball found itself playing an opponent back to back within 48 hours. In both cases, Pfeiffer was blown out in the first meeting and came back to win handily in the next, defeating Belmont Abbey on the road Saturday night 103-89 despite missing 14 free throws.
On a night when Belmont Abbey paid tribute to Kay Yow, late sister of Abbey women's coach Susan Yow, Pfeiffer won the rebounding 41-34, turned the ball over a season low 14 times, shot 55% from the floor and scored over 100 points for the 11th time this season.
There was a moving ceremony honoring Coach Yow in a gym where almost everyone wore pink in her honor. The Pfeiffer men joined the Pfeiffer women's team, who had just played magnificent in a surprise upset of Abbey's women, on the floor for the 15 minute ceremony between games. Both Pfeiffer teams joined in the tribute wearing pink warm-up jerseys over their black uniforms. All of the Falcon coaching staff could be seen in the same pink warm-ups as well.
"What Kay Yow did with her life as a coach was phenomenal in terms of wins and championships, but what she did over the last 20 years to champion the cause to find a cure for cancer while fighting her own daily battle with the disease that was eating at her body was so courageous and so incredibly unselfish," said Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis. "I am so glad we were able to be a part of the tribute and that our players got another look at how important and selfless a person she was. It really put this game of basketball in perspective."
Robert McGriff (Lancaster, SC) was outstanding scoring 26 points on only 14 shot attempts and grabbing seven rebounds. Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) was a force inside shooting 10-12 from the field, scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) continued his stellar play with 17 points on only seven shots making six of them including 4-5 from the 3-point line. Alvin Slaton (Fayetteville, NC) led the team with four assists and Athalie Rivera (Baltimore, MD) and Chris Donald (Boston, MA) added five rebounds each.
"This team has an incredible ability to bounce back from adversity and has done so all season long," said Coach Davis. "We were annihilated in our own building on Thursday and tonight we came out and played like champions. Robert was incredible all night. He was sick on Thursday but tried to give us what he had and obviously felt much better tonight. He made so many big baskets for us when the game was close. Chris Woods showed his teammates and his coaches the player he is capable of being as he was dominant against much, much bigger players in the Abbey frontcourt. Jeff's offensive performances have been incredible. He was the one positive we had in our big loss Thursday and tonight he made play after play on the offensive end. Davon Gilliard (Charleston, SC) gave us terrific defensive play pressuring the basketball and made several key drives on the offensive end. This is the second time this season we have been knocked down and darn near knocked out and got up off the mat and came back swinging. Like most teams this time of year we have a lot of guys injured and unable to practice, but tonight they put their aches and pains aside and fought for each other. Our women's team had an incredible win immediately before we played and I think it really inspired our guys when they bounced back from their big loss on Thursday."
The Falcons are 8-4 in Conference Carolinas play and are tied for third place.
