Lady Falcon Volleyball Earns Another Split in Final Day of L-R Invitational

HICKORY, N.C. – Pfeiffer University split another pair of matches on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the 2009 Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational. The Lady Falcons won their first contest of the day with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-10) sweep of Elizabeth City State. Pfeiffer had the tables turn in the afternoon match against host Lenoir-Rhyne falling 3-0 (11-25, 22-25, 22-25) to the Bears. The Lady Falcons stand even at 2-2 after the opening weekend of play.

PFEIFFER 3, ELIZABETH CITY STATE 0

An early start time on day two of the L-R Invitational didn’t have any effect on the Lady Falcons as they cruised to their second straight win with a quick sweep of Elizabeth City State. Pfeiffer as a team hit at 27% for the match, swinging at an impressive 48% clip in the third and final set.

Much like day one, Kristina Mordini and Vanessa Gerig led the way for the Lady Falcons against the Vikings. Mordini registered a dozen kills hitting at 36% for the match. Gerig picked up 29 assists while serving up another seven aces.

Mordini and Gerig weren’t the only ones with an offensive output in the morning contest. Freshman Jordan O’Bryant swung at 62% for the match while fellow newcomer Abbie Ovbey slammed home seven kills. Victoria Parrish also tossed in a half-dozen kills in the Lady Falcons victory.

LENOIR-RHYNE 3, PFEIFFER 0

Pfeiffer didn’t fare very well in the hitting department against the Bears as their attack percentage broke even in sets one and three. The Lady Falcons successful sent 27 kills to floor against Lenoir-Rhyne but faltered with 24 attacking errors allowing the Bears to pull away in the afternoon match.

Mordini and Ovbey led Pfeiffer offensively in match two each picking up seven kills. Totals for opening weekend saw the Lady Falcons outhit their opponents by a slight margin of 5%, but as a team, racked up 36 service aces which was three times more than all four of their weekend opponents combined.

Pfeiffer returns to volleyball action over the Labor Day weekend with three games at the Limestone Crossover in Gaffney, SC. The Lady Falcons will battle against Newberry on Friday before a pair of matches against Lander and North Greenville on Saturday.
