Women's Cross Country takes team title; Men finish 8th at Erskine Invitational
August 30, 2009
DUE WEST, S.C. – The women’s cross country at Pfeiffer University opened up the season in grand style by winning the 2009 Erskine Invitational on Saturday morning. The women finished the meet with 52 points, finishing two points better than Spartanburg Methodist. The men’s cross country also opened up their season on Saturday as well finishing 8th with a team total of 179.
The women’s five recorded times all came with finishes in the top-20, including three in the top-10. Magen Abernathy crossed the line first for the Lady Falcons, just in front of teammate Kaitlyn Mullis, with times of 16:59 and 17:00 respectively in the 4k race. Vlada Mouravieva came across in ninth overall trailing Mullis by just three seconds. With a time of 17:29, Lindsey Phillips completed her race in 12th place while Rebecca Pigg finished 19th with a time of 17:57.
Head coach Scott Nolt didn’t think his women’s team finished at the top. “I didn’t think we had won” stated Nolt. “Spartanburg Methodist went 1-2-3 and I didn’t think we could make that up with our 4th and 5th runners. But, we have a very deep team and can beat teams with any of our runners. Rachel running sixth for us and finishing in front of their last two runners gave us the two points we needed to win. I can’t say enough about how hard Abernathy and Mullis have been working all summer and these first few weeks. They are great leaders and giving a great example for our freshmen.”
On the men’s side, Matt Tyndall crossed the stripe first for Pfeiffer with a time of 21:38, finishing 14th, in the men’s 6k race. Other times for the men include Will Oliver at 23:32, Zack Allen at 24:21, Zach Gray at 25:19 and Grady Gaston with a time of 27:58.
Nolt knew ahead of time things might be tough at Erskine. “We knew without Daniel and Josh we were going to have a tough day, if those guys were there we would have been a 4th or 5th place team. I am really excited about our chances this year, and saw good things out of Will and Zack for their first college race.”
Both the men and women’s cross country teams race again next Saturday morning, September 5th in Lumberton, NC at the UNC-Pembroke invitational.
