August 31, 2009
FORK SHOALS, S.C. - Team Pfeiffer Cycling traveled to Fork Shoals, SC to contend the South Carolina State Road Race this past weekend.† Michael Robinson, F, Naples, FL, took† 3rd in the Menís B (Cat 3) road race.† This course was made up of very steep climbs, long, fast flats and an uphill finish. Robinson was able to maintain a steady position during the five-lap/65 mile race. The temperature increased during the race to well over 95 degrees. By the end of the final lap the field was down to approximately 50 racers after many dropped out due to extreme temps. At the 300 meter mark with two men ahead by 60 meters, Robinson caught the field in a very surprising attack. He was able to hold his sprint and take a strong third place, just coming up short on runner-up honors.
In the Menís D (Cat 5) race, three-laps/40 miles, Eric Sekercan from Sarasota, FL, finished his race taking the field sprint in the group that finished behind the lead group. "Sekercanís sprint was one of the strongest and fastest of the day" stated head coach Tommie Brock.
Pfeiffer President Dr. Ambrose also raced this past weekend in the menís 45+ field with over 60 racers. Several crashes occurred during this race with Dr. Ambrose being able to avoid all of these crashes to finish strong in a strong 8th-place overall.
The Cycling team will race again Sept. 13 at the Carolina Cup in Greensboro. These are non collegiate races. Each collegiate racer also holds a license with the USAC (United States of America Cycling) federation. The ACCC (Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference) season starts Feb. 13, 2010 at NSCU.
