September 5, 2009
LUMBERTON, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s Cross Country teams were in action early Saturday morning at Luther Britt Park in the UNC-Pembroke Invitational. The men’s team finished 5th out of eight teams while the women’s team finished in the runner-up spot behind Augusta State.
Pfeiffer’s men were led by senior Matt Tyndall who finished in 27:58 and 9th place overall. Freshman Will Oliver finished second for Pfeiffer in 29th place with a time of 30:25 in his first career 8k race. Zack Allen crossed the line third for the Falcons with a time of 31:53 while junior Zach Gray ran a personal best 32:32 good for fourth on the team. Grady Gaston was Pfeiffer’s fifth scorer with a 35:42.
Coach Nolt was pleased with the short-handed team’s finish. “Everyone stepped up with good races today. I am really impressed with how [Zack] Allen and [Will] Oliver have been improving each week. With Josh [Roberts] and Daniel [Barnhardt] still out, we are going to struggle as a team, but I am very pleased with our individual performances.”
On the women’s side Magen Abernathy and Lindsey Phillips led the way for the Lady Falcons with 7th and 8th place finishes respectively. Abernathy crossed the line in 25:19, two seconds in front of Phillips.
Vlada Mouravieva finished just outside the top ten with an 11th place finish in 25:34. Kaitlyn Mullis clocked in with a time of 26:16 in the 6k race good for a 17th place finish. Rachel Biggerstaff (27th/28:40), Yasmin Ingram (33th/29:18), and April Hinson (43rd/32:27) rounded out the Lady Falcons finish order.
Coach Nolt was again pleasantly surprised with the team’s success. “It’s been a tough week. Carrie Early and Chelsea Tysinger had been out, and Rebecca [Pigg] and Rachel [Biggerstaff] also went down this week.” Biggerstaff was exhibiting flu like symptoms and was unable to practice most of the week. Early, Tysinger, and Pigg will all be back in practice this week and may be ready for next week’s pre-regional meet at Wingate University. “Everyone stepped up today knowing that we were shorthanded. It is exciting to be having the success we are in the face of adversity, but we saw today that we still have work to do to be a top team in the region” commented Coach Nolt.
Pfeiffer’s next meet will be next Saturday morning at Wingate. Both teams will get to see many of the southeast region squads at the Pre-Regional meet.
