September 21, 2009
SUMTER, S.C. – The men’s and women’s tennis teams at Pfeiffer University each finished strong in both the Conference Carolinas Individual tournament and the ITA Regional tournaments held during the past two weekends. The highlight was a tournament win by the men’s number one doubles team of Philip Lawson and Johan de Wit at the conference event.
At the conference tournament, Lawson and de Wit were able to knock off Anderson with a 9-7 win in the final to secure the title. The number two doubles team of Frank Pouchet and Andrea Cazzaro came close to booking a trip into the finals before falling to Barton in the semis.
On the women’s side, newcomer Alona Krutkina played very well at the conference tournament in number one singles, knocking off opponents from Barton and Erskine before exiting after a four and four loss to Christine Vanard of Lees-McRae.
At the ITA regional tournament, both Pfeiffer teams continued to play well during the fall season. The duo of Pouchet and Cazzaro again reached the semifinals of the “B” draw, but had to withdraw due to an injury.
In the ladies bracket, Krutkina’s play continued at a high standard once again reaching the semifinals of the “A” consolation bracket, before also withdrawing due to injury. In the “B” consolation, Maddy Billeter got as far as the quarterfinals before bowing out while Chelsi Haefele made it one step further into the semis.
Both the men’s and women’s team will wrap up the brief, fall part of the schedule next weekend at the Fall Mountain Invitational hosted by Brevard College in Brevard, NC.
