Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – For the third year in a row, the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons needed five sets to knock off the visiting Limestone Saints in women’s volleyball action inside the Merner Gym. Two of the top teams in Conference Carolinas battled it out for just over two hours before Pfeiffer scored the 3-2 (25-14, 25-13, 21-25, 24-26, 15-8) match win. The Lady Falcons, winners of five-straight, improve to 8-6 overall, 5-1 in the conference while Limestone falls to 8-8, 4-2.

Pfeiffer came flying out the gates hitting at a 40% and 47% clip in sets one and two. Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) broke a 5-5 tie in the opening set with her first of a season-high 17 kills on the night. A kill by Chelsea Anthony (Pickens, SC) at 12-7, brought the Saints within four halfway through the set. The freshman duo of Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) and Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) would help the Lady Falcons finish off set one with three kills apiece in a convincing 25-14 win.

The Lady Falcons started set two with more fast paced action as O’Bryant and Ovbey threw down a couple of early kills moving Pfeiffer to a 5-2 lead. Pfeiffer would then take advantage of three-straight Limestone errors and a pair of aces by Mordini to gain their largest advantage of the night at 15-5. The final stretch in the second set would see Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, IL) serve up two more aces while Ovbey threw down two more kills for another big win, 25-13 in set two.

The Saints would come out in set three with a 21% attack percentage, their highest of their match, to avoid a sweep. Danielle Siebert (Naperville, IL) would register three-straight aces to get Limestone back even at 6-6. The middle portion of set three would go back and forth as Melissa Thomas’ (Pickens, SC) kills at 17-17 and 21-21 would keep the Saints in business. With three late errors committed by Pfeiffer, Thomas finished off the Lady Falcons with a kill and a 25-21 set three victory for the Saints.

Taking the momentum into set four, the Saints would have to fight off a late Pfeiffer rally to force a fifth set. With a couple of kills from Holli Dawson (Beaufort, SC) and an ace by Brooke England (Rochester, NY), Limestone jumped out to a quick 8-5 lead forcing a timeout by Pfeiffer. After another Thomas kill at 18-11 gave the Saints their largest lead of the set, the Lady Falcons would come back with a couple of kills by Mordini and Gerig squaring the contest up at 24-24. After a Saints timeout, a kill by Sam Johnson (Summerville, SC) and attack error by the Lady Falcons, Limestone would take set four 26-24.

In the deciding fifth set, another kill by O’Bryant and a pair of Saints attack miscues would give the Lady Falcons an early 3-1 advantage. A service error by Limestone and two more kills by Mordini shot Pfeiffer out to a 6-2 advantage, playing to 15 in the final set. After a Gerig kill and the teams changing sides, Gerig would finish off the Saints with a pair of kills and a ace to end the match.

In addition to her kills, Gerig finished her night’s work with a season-high 44 assists. Mordini’s 17 kills were also a season-high. Ovbey would follow with 15 kills while O’Bryant finished with 14.
