Cannon's Header Helps Men's Soccer Upset #1 Team in America; Falcons Blank Lees-McRae 1-0

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Pfeiffer Universityís Jeff Cannon (Lewis Center, OH) headed home the lone goal of the match as the Falcons upset the number one ranked team in the country, Lees-McRae, on senior day in menís soccer action Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. With the win, the Falcons improve to 13-4 overall, 8-2 in conference play, and will host a first-round Conference Carolinas match next Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as the #3 seed. The Bobcats, who clinched the conference title with Pfeifferís loss on Wednesday at Limestone, suffers their first setback of the season falling to 14-1-1, 8-1-1.
In front of the largest home crowd of the season, the Falcons didnít waste any time in getting on top of the Bobcats early. Cannonís strike was set up by a Lees-McRae foul just outside the 18-yard box in the fourth minute of play.. Senior Wilver Menacho (Charlotte, NC) took the free kick and delivered a perfect cross to Cannon who found the back right post for his second goal of the season. The tally was the only goal of the season allowed by Lees-McRae in the first half.
Falcon goalkeeper Alex Moreno (Huntersvile, NC) stopped three Bobcats shots in the win. Senior defender Chris Venable (McLeansville, NC) made one team save for Pfeiffer. Lees-McRae tried time and time again to generate some offense but was whistled for nine offside calls in the match. Jaime Price (Flintshire, WALES), Dale Parker (Worksop, ENGLAND), Jamie Bladen (Yorkshire, ENGLAND) and Berin Boracic (Orlando, FL) each had a shot for the visitors.
Both teams will begin the Conference Carolinas tournament at home on Tuesday. The Falcons, seeded third, will face either Belmont Abbey or Mount Olive at 2:00 p.m. while the Bobcats hold home-field advantage with the #1 seed facing St. Andrews.
