November 15, 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Pfeiffer University opened up its 2009-2010 women’s basketball season with a 62-57 loss to Johnson. C Smith on Sunday night in day one of the Queen City Classic. The Bulls Wendy Stywalt led all scorers with 16 points as the Lady Falcons had three scorers in double figures, but couldn’t hold on to a late lead. Sunday marked the opener for both squads.
Brittany Cox’s layup gave Pfeiffer a 14-12 lead early on in the first half. A pair of jumpers by Stywalt would shift the lead back to J.C. Smith before a three-pointer by Jamila Harris gave the Lady Falcons a 19-18 edge. A three-ball by Domonique China cut a five-point deficit into two, before Shakira Clarke tossed in a couple of jumpers for a five-point Bulls lead at the break.
After a pair of China free throws put the Lady Falcons back on top 38-37 five minutes into the second period, the Lady Falcons would hold that until Demetria Bell knocked down a couple of free throws with just under four and a half minutes left in the game. Three Pfeiffer turnovers in a 60-second span gave the Bulls the edge they needed as Stywalt and Jasmine Alston combined to toss in six late free throws to seal the win.
China and Olivia Surratt paced Pfeiffer with 11 points on the night while Devona Knight followed closely with 10. The Lady Falcons will wrap up their tournament play in the Queen City Classic with a 4:00 p.m. tip-off with Wingate on Monday after. Pfeiffer will open up their Conference Carolinas season a week from Tuesday at home against Lees-McRae.
