Women's Basketball Unable to Slow Wingate in the Second-Half; Fall 61-45 Late to Bulldogs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Wingate University shot a combined 50% from the field in the second half en route to a 61-45 non-conference win over Pfeiffer University in women’s basketball action on Monday afternoon in the final day of the Queen City Classic. The win keeps the Bulldogs unbeaten on the early season at 2-0 while the Lady Falcons remain winless at 0-2.
Jessica Walters had six first-half points to lead Pfeiffer to a 22-19 advantage at the break. The Lady Falcons had the lead for 18 of the 20 minutes in the first period as Jamila Harris drained a three and knocked down a jumper for her five points helping Pfeiffer to the three-point lead at the half.
In the second half, Brittany Cox canned a three that gave the Lady Falcons their biggest lead of the night at 28-21, but Wingate would responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead on a three-ball by Emily Parrish. After a pair of free throws by the Lady Falcons’ Devona Knight, the Bulldogs would streak again with eight minutes to play going on a dozen-point run to put the Lady Falcons away for good.
Harris led all scorers with 11 points on the night. Parrish paced the Bulldogs with her eight points as Wingate out-shot Pfeiffer 42-23 in the second half.
The Pfeiffer Lady Falcons will take the rest of the week off preparing for the 2009-2010 Conference Carolinas opener. Pfeiffer will host Lees-McRae in the conference opener next Tuesday, November 24th at 5:30 p.m.
