Pettiway and Woods Lead Men's Basketball to First Win of Season with 99-84 Victory over Livingstone
November 16, 2009
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Shooting 56% in the first half of play, Pfeiffer University was able to rebound for a 99-84 victory over Livingstone College in men’s basketball action on Monday night in the consolation game of the 2009 Highway 52 Shootout. Chris Woods paced the Falcons with 23 points followed closely by Jeff Pettiway’s 22. Pfeiffer evens their record to 1-1 on the year while the Blue Bears fall to 0-2.
Pettiway led the way in the first-half going four of six from behind the three-point line while draining both free throw attempts. A pair of Pettiway’s three five minutes into the contest helped the Falcons go on a 17-0 run to create the separation from Livingstone. A dunk and pair of late free throws by Woods gave Pfeiffer its 55-32 lead at the half.
After a rough night from the charity stripe on Sunday, the Falcons came out in the second-half draining 24-of-28 from the line which accounted for more than half of their 44 second-half points. Pettiway would knock down all six of his free-throws, shooting a perfect 8-for-8 at the line, while Woods drained all but one. Back-to-back three-pointers by Derrick Truesdale and Yuki Yamaguchi would improve the Falcons advantage before James Crowder and Kierre Jordan would chip in with four-consecutive free throws made with just under eight minutes to play. Pettiway would convert four of the final six Pfeiffer free throws for the 12-point win.
Greg Henry would lead Livingstone with his 23 points, followed by Jarred Stockton’s 21 and Aaron Caruthers’ 16. The Blue Bears shot 57% from the field in the second half, never being able to climb out of the first-half deficit.
Pfeiffer will get back to action next Tuesday, November 24th hosting Lees-McRae in the Conference Carolinas opener. Tip-off from the Merner Gym will take place at 7:30 p.m.
