Pettiway Scores 25; Men's Basketball Gives Win Away as Second Half Fouls Prove Costly in 97-94 Loss

SALISBURY, NC - Catawba rallied from a double-digit second half deficit and claimed a 97-94 win over visiting Pfeiffer in menís basketball action on the final day of the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Senior Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) led the Catawba Indians with 21 points as the Tribe improved to 3-1. The Falcons fall to 2-2, getting a game-high 25 points from Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD).
Pfeiffer led nearly the entire contest. Pettiway canned a three-pointer with 13:31 left in the opening half for a 19-16 lead and the Falcons were on top until the final minutes. Pfeiffer led by 14 in the opening half and were up 51-41 at the break. Back-to-back jumpers by Kierre Jordan (Atlanta, GA) gave the Falcons a 65-52 edge with 14:30 remaining.
Catawba would eat into the lead, pulling within 65-61 on a layup by Stephen Coles (Danville, VA/Washington HS) at the 12:58 mark. Pfeiffer surged back on top, going up 78-70 with 10:15 to play on a pair of free throws by Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, FL).
Down six with 3:41 remaining, Fields scored six straight points for Catawba to knot things at 89-all with 2:31 left. Pettiway gave the Falcons their last lead on a pair from the stripe, but two free throws by Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) and a layup by Fields gave the Indians a 93-91 lead with 1:25 to play.
After two missed free throws by Pfeiffer, Fields upped the lead to 95-91 on a jumper with 44 seconds left. Pfeiffer missed several three-point attempts on its next possession and Fields added two more free throws with four seconds to go. Pettiway hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.
Rutherford added 19 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three steals for Catawba. Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) also scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) had 11 points, hitting on a trio of three-pointers, while Donzell Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar HS) blocked a career-high six shots.
Jordan followed Pettiway with 19 points for the Falcons. Chris Woods (Greensboro, NC) added 16 points and Athalie Rivera (Baltimore, MD) grabbed a dozen rebounds. Catawba shot 50.7% for the game, including a sparkling 63% in the second half. Pfeiffer hit just 34.2% in the second half after canning 52.5% in the opening half.
