January 23, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A double-double posted by Domonique China (Durham, NC) helped Pfeiffer University slide past Erskine College 82-72 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball on Saturday night inside the Merner Gym. China dropped in 20 points and snagged 10 rebounds as the Lady Falcons improve to 8-7 overall, winners of three-straight in conference play, now at 8-2. The Lady Fleet fall to 6-8, 5-5.
Pfeiffer trailed for the first 10 minutes of play as Mary Ann Langford (LaGrange, GA) drained a three and a pair of jumpers sending Erskine up by four at 17-13. Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) sank a three at the 10:50 mark of the first half putting the Lady Falcons up for good with their first lead of the night, 18-17. Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA) and Lauren Henderson (Calhoun Falls, SC) tied the contest a couple of times on a pair of layups, but Olivia Surratt (Morganton, NC) and Jamila Harris (Danville, VA) tossed in a couple of late baskets to put Pfeiffer up 34-30 at the intermission.
Out of the break, Pfeiffer spurted out on an 11-0 run jumping out to a 15-point lead on another jumper by China and three-ball by Shelley Reese (Brown Summitt, NC). After a basket by Catherine Houston (Greenville, SC) cut the Lady Fleet deficit down to 10 minutes later, the Lady Falcons again responded, this time with an 8-0 run, capped off by Rhoney’s layup. Celeste Caudill (Sparta, NC) deposited a three at the 10:50 mark that gave Pfeiffer its biggest lead of the night, 59-39, before the Lady Fleet would try one last comeback attempt. Morgan contributed with four of her team-high 18 points during a 9-0 run, 10 total points in the final 3:24, but China would take over for Pfeiffer scoring six of the Lady Falcons final seven points in the win.
Harris followed China’s 20 points with 17 on the night. Pfeiffer also saw double-digit performances by Reese and Rhoney who each scored 13. For Erskine, Langford finished one-point behind Morgan with 17 while Christine Phan (Savannah, GA) concluded with 10. China flirted with a triple-double finishing with a game-high six assists.
Pfeiffer will wrap up its three-game homestand facing Anderson on Monday night. In a battle of two teams in a second-place tie atop the Conference Carolinas standings, tip-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
