Results vs. Delta St. @ N. Georgia (2009-02-07 12:00:00)
February 7, 2009Dahlonega, GA -- The Pfeiffer baseball team lost their second game of the weekend on Saturday afternoon at host institution North Georgia State College and University. The Falcons lost this non-conference game 8-4 to Delta State University. The Falcons’ record falls to 2-3 overall, while the Statesmen improve to 1-2.
The Statesmen jumped ahead early with three unearned runs in the first inning off of Falcon starter Jonathon McDaniel (Mocksville, NC). Delta used hits by Clay Sartain (Horn Lake, GA) and Kellen Bozeman (Baton Rouge, LA) to get the rally started, then scored the first two runs on a Pfeiffer error and added the other on a single by Steven Oswald (Springfield, IL).
Delta State added two more runs in the top of the second on a two-out double by Bozeman. Pfeiffer then jumped on the board in the bottom half of the inning with a long homerun by Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC).
In the third, Delta added another run with another two-out hit this one by Cade Hoggard (Oxford, GA). The Falcons answered again in the bottom half of the inning when Dunn walked then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Statesmen starter David Mooney (Clinton, GA) then Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) drove him in.
Then, in the fifth, Delta State added another run on another two-out RBI, this run forced Pfeiffer to go to the bullpen and they called upon Nick Fogleman (Waxhaw, NC).
Foglemen held the Statesmen at bay for three innings while the Falcons tried to fight back.
In the Pfeiffer half of the seventh they got it started with a leadoff walk by Julian Medina (Glen Cove, NY) then Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) singled bringing up Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC). Shoemaker hit a long ball that brought everyone to their feet but unfortunately it hooked foul just before clearing the fence. After that he drove in Medina with a groundout. The Falcons added another run during the inning on a fielder’s choice by Mike Green (Brandon, FL).
Delta added to their lead with another run in the top of the eighth to finish off the scoring.
Pfeiffer was lead at the plate by Strickland (3-4, with a double and a run scored) and Pearl (2-3 with an RBI). McDaniel suffered the loss going 4 2/3 innings giving up seven runs only four of which were earned.
Delta State was lead by Michael Nieman (Yelm, WA) (4-6, with two runs scored and two doubles) and Bozeman (4-5, with two RBIS and two doubles. Cesar Rodriquez (Miami, FL) came in during the fifth in relief of Statesmen starter David Mooney and earned the win. He went 2 1/3 innings giving up two runs on only one hit.
Pfeiffer returns to action tomorrow February 8, 2009 against North Georgia College and State at 3:00 PM.
