Limestone Drains Late Three to Edge Men's Basketball 91-90

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Tyron Evans’ three-point basket with only seconds left on the clock lifted the Limestone College men’s basketball team to a 91-90 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday night at the Timken Center. Limestone improves to 12-7 overall and 8-6 in the conference. The Falcons fall to 12-7 overall and 8-5 in the league.

Limestone’s Danny Friend (Morrow, Ga.) scored a game-high 31 points for the Saints as he also recorded 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. Jarrell Douglass (Leesburg, Fla.) had 18 points on 9-9 field-goal shooting. Stewart Clark (Atlanta, Ga.) and Anthony Middleton (Holly Hill, S.C.) scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.  Nick Debnam (Raleigh, N.C.) had a game-high 6 assists. Evans pulled down 6 rebounds.

Pfeiffer was paced by Chris Woods’ (Thomasville, N.C.) 21 points. Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, Md.) and James Crowder (High Point, N.C.) scored 13 points apiece. Derrick Truesdale (Waxhaw, N.C.) had 12 points while Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, Fla.) scored 10. Woods led his team with 4 rebounds.

The Saints had a 44-37 lead at the end of the first half. Pfeiffer's 13 turnovers resulted in 15 points for the Saints, but the Falcons only had 4 points from 9 Limestone turnovers. The Saints were 15-29 from the field (51.7%) compared to the Falcons' 40% (10-25).

The Saints had as much as a 12-point lead during the second period (59-47), but the Falcons started to close the gap in the last 10 minutes. After trailing for the entire period, Pfeiffer took a two-point lead (87-85) at the 1:34 mark. Friend scored a free-throw to put the Saints within one, but Woods followed up with two made free-throws to put the Falcons up 89-86. Friend followed up with a 2-point basket as the Saints cut the visitors lead to 1 (89-88), but Pfeiffer capitalized on another free-throw opportunity to go up by 2. Evans sank the winning three-point shot on the next possession for the 91-90 victory.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities at the charity line with over 60 fouls being called during the contest. The Saints were 24-40 (60%) in free throws while the visitors were 26-34 (76.5%). Pfeiffer shot 50% from the field (28-56) while the Saints were 32-57 (56.1%). Pfeiffer had 24 points from behind the arc (8-15/53.3%).  Limestone held the 35-33 edge on rebounds, and converted 18 points off turnovers.

Limestone travels to Anderson, S.C., on Monday to face conference-rival Anderson University at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons host Barton on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Misenheimer, N.C.
