MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A game-high 32 points on 15-of-22 shooting by Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) led the Pfeiffer University Falcons to a 102-74 victory over St. Andrews in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action on Saturday night inside the Merner Gym. Pfeiffer, winners in their last four of five, improve to 16-8 overall, 12-6 in conference play. The Knights take the loss falling to 7-18, 3-15.
Woods started the night off with a quick basket to begin his game-high night. Derrick Truesdale (Waxhaw, NC) and Woods would each knock down a couple of field goals five minutes in to square the contest at eight and ten, before senior James Crowder (High Point, NC), playing in his final regular-season home game with Truesdale, would hit a triple to give the Falcons a 23-20 lead. Crowder’s three began a 13-2 run by the hosts.
Marcus Connor (Charlotte, NC) would cut the St. Andrews deficit down to five, 21-16, with a jumper at 11:34 before Demetrius Monroe (High Point, NC) sliced it to four just two minutes later. But, a fast-paced 8-0 run, capped by a Yuki Yamaguchi (Tokyo, JAPAN) three put the Falcons back up a dozen with seven minutes to play.
The Knights would again come right back on their own 10-2 streak as another Connor bucket made it a four point game with five minutes remaining in the opening half. A dunk by Crowder put the hosts up 10 with 3:58 to go while a pair of Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) free throws sent Pfeiffer into the half up nine.
The Falcons came out in the second half putting up 57 points en route to the 28 point win. Woods made it an 11 point advantage with a lay in at the 17:49 mark before Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, FL) had his own layup minutes later that gave Pfeiffer its largest lead of the night, 16, coming up on the halfway point of the period.
At the midway point of the second half, Pettiway would drain a long three-ball that capped a 9-2 run giving the Falcons a 22 point lead with 9:45 left. A pair of Yamaguchi free throws put the Falcons up 28 with six minutes remaining before Woods pushed the advantage to 31 with three more close range shot late in the win.
In addition to Woods, Hollinger would finish the night with a career-high 24 while Truesdale concluded with 10. Crowder also had a game-high 13 rebounds with his nine points. Antonio Moffitt (Raleigh, NC) had a team-high 18 for the Knights followed closely by Marvin Jackson’s (Gloucester, VA) 17.
