Kreshka's 3-for-5 Day Leads Softball to 5-0, 9-1 DH Sweep of Shaw
February 21, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Due to scheduling cancellations and weather in the past week, the Pfeiffer University softball team had a rare, full week off before hitting the field on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Falcons made the most of that practice time coming out with a 5-0 and 9-1 doubleheader sweep over Shaw University at Jack Ingram Field. Pfeiffer improves its overall mark to 4-6 on the year while the Lady Bears remain winless at 0-6.
GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 5, Shaw 0
The Lady Falcons earned the shutout in the opener behind Shelby Brown’s (South Hill, VA) seven innings on the mound. The right-hander surrendered just five hits with fanning five in the win.
Pfeiffer scored a pair of quick runs in the bottom of the first as Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL) drove in Mariah Chalk (Hickory, NC) and Kylee Nichols (McMinville, OR) with her single to center. Chalk and Nichols both began the inning with base hits. In the second, after reaching on a two-out triple down the right-field line, Bryttny Kreshka (Roseburg, OR) would make it 3-0 after plating on a Lady Bears wild pitch.
The final two runs tallied in the home half of the fifth as Waylock scored via wild pitch again while Brown did her own damage at the plate singling in Heather Nobles (Angier, NC). Shaw had all five hits delivered by five different starters led by Phytina Hyde’s (Fayetteville, NC) double.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 9, Shaw 1 (5 innings)
Pfeiffer wasted little time in jumping out to a big lead in the nightcap. A five-run second and four-run third would be all the necessary scoring needed for the eight-run victory. Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH), Kreshka and Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) would each pick up a RBI in the second while the other two runs came around on Shaw errors.
In the third, Kreshka would strike again with an RBI-single to center while Johnson made her presence felt again with a two-run infield-single. Kreshka scored the second run of Johnson’s at-bat, scampering home from second on the play. Sam Taylor (Surrey, BRITISH COLUMBIA) tallied the other run on another Lady Bears wild pitch.
Shaw got on the board for their lone run in the fourth as Monica Grimmage (Georgetown, SC) started the inning with a double to right-center, later scoring on a wild pitch. Kreshka led the Lady Falcons offense in game two going 2-for-2 at the dish with a pair of RBI and runs scored. Chalk tossed the complete game for the win striking out six.
Pfeiffer will return to the diamond on Tuesday heading to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
