#21 UNC-Pembroke Uses Three-Run Eighth to Slide Past Baseball 12-11
February 25, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Despite committing six errors defensively, UNC-Pembroke showed why they’re ranked #21 in the country offensively pulling out a 12-11 win over Pfeiffer University on Thursday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field. Wind chills in the 20’s didn’t seem to slow down either team’s offensive as the Braves and Falcons combined for 23 runs on 26 hits. UNCP improves its 2010 record to 9-1 on the season while Pfeiffer falls to 6-9.
Julian Medina (Glen Cove, NY) broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot to left for his first of the year. Each side would trade four-spots in the third as the Falcons eventually took a 6-5 lead into the fourth.
Joe Mangum (Charlotte, NC) started the UNCP third with an RBI single to right while Keith Whitman (Elkin, NC) later delivered a run-scoring double to left. Mangum would score on Tom Porricelli’s (Howell, NJ) single to left with Whitman plating on a Jordan Pefram (Greensboro, NC) sacrifice fly to left.
In the home half, Pfeiffer took advantage of three Braves errors in the frame as Will Davis (New London, NC) came through with a two-run single to center that put two runs on the board, one unearned. Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) later scored on a misplayed ground ball to short while Davis later tallied the fourth run on another fielding miscue at second.
Whitman came through again for the visitors in the top of the fourth with a two-run single back up the middle that gave UNCP a 7-6 lead. Again three outs later, another Braves error allowed for Zack Pou (Stanley, NC) to score as Sharpe reached on a dropped pop up in shallow left-center field.
Whitman would register his fourth RBI of the day in the Pembroke sixth with another one of his three hits, this time to right-center. Porricelli’s base knock to left moments later put the Braves back up 9-7. After the stretch, Pfeiffer bounced back with three more runs to grab a 10-9 advantage.
Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) started the rally with a lead-off single to right, coming around on a pinch-hit, two-run blast by Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC). Pou finished the stanza with a RBI-single to center scoring Carlos Badillo (Gurabo, PR).
Pembroke took the lead for good in the eighth with three runs on a pair of hits and a bases loaded walk. Mangum came through with the first base hit to score Aaron Parnell (Benson, NC) before Alex Pearce (Rocky Mount, NC) took the free pass with the bags full of Braves. Derek Funk’s (Asheboro, NC) infield run-scoring single to short proved to be the game-winner as Mangum raced in from third. The Falcons would benefit from a wild pitch in the home half of the eighth, but went down 1-2-3 on three strikeouts in the ninth as Brian Willis (Hope Mills, NC) earned his first win of the season.
For UNCP, Whitman led the way with his four RBI and three hits as Parnell and Mangum each had three hits for the Braves. Pfeiffer was led by Sharpe’s 3-for-5 day at the plate and Pou’s single and double.
Pfeiffer will continue its ten-game homestand on Saturday hosting Coker in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
