Men's Volleyball Runs to the Max in 1-2 Appearance at the Stevenson Invitational

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė The Pfeiffer University menís volleyball team went 1-2 playing to the max in three long matches during a 24-hour time frame this weekend at the Stevenson Invitational in Baltimore. The Falcons suffered a 3-0 (28-30, 28-30, 25-30) loss on Friday to Medaille, won a 3-2 marathon with host Stevenson (30-19, 23-30, 28-30, 30-19, 15-11) on Saturday morning, before finishing with a 3-2 loss to Hunter (25-30, 30-24, 30-28, 27-30, 12-15). After the weekend, Pfeiffer stands at 5-9 overall.

Match One vs. Medaille

Pfeiffer was in all three sets to begin the invitational on Friday night, falling late in each set to Medaille. Pfeiffer as a team struggled hitting just .173 for the match, but ramped up to .257 in set two. Michael Dhalle led the Falcons with 10 kills followed by Eric Edelmanís seven and Clancy Gayís six. Evan Fullerton scored 32 assists.

Match Two vs. Stevenson

In the Saturday morning opener, Pfeiffer put four Falcons in double-digit kills leading to the 3-2 win. Down two sets to one, Pfeiffer battled back for 30-19 and 15-11 victories to clinch the match. The Falcons, helped with 16 team blocks, hit .361 in set four and .333 in the finale to earn the win.

Hitting .243 for the match while holding host Stevenson to .095, Micah Bortner registered a team-high 22 kills while Dhalle threw down 17. Gay followed with 15 in front of Edlemanís 10. Fullerton had a match-high 63 assists in the middle match. Stevenson was led by Jason Matkowski and his match-high 25 kills.

Match Three vs. Hunter

Another marathon awaited the Falcons just an hour later after knocking off Stevenson. This time, Pfeiffer held the 2-1 set lead falling late to Hunter.
The Falcons stayed consisted on Saturday hitting .233 against Hunter in the loss, which included an even .300 in set two.

Gay again paced the Falcons with 27 kills in the match. Bortner followed with 16 while Edelman concluded with 11. Fullerton again led in the helper department with 62, totaling 125 for the two matches. Pfeiffer added 14 more blocks accounting for 30 in the 10 sets played on Saturday.

Pfeiffer has a short week off before traveling to Quincy, Illinois next weekend for four matches in two days. The Falcons will take on Missouri Baptist and Fontebonne on Friday before finishing with host Quincy and Hannibal LaGrange on Saturday.
