March 16, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Francis Marion freshman Don Sandifer (Bamberg, SC) started and finished on the mound as the 13th-ranked Patriots claimed an 11-3 win over Pfeiffer University in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. Francis Marion moves their record to 18-5 overall while the Falcons dip to 13-16.
A Barrett Kleinknecht (Florence, SC) double put the Patriots on the board in the third as Graham Couch (Bishopville, SC) scored. Pfeiffer bounced back with two in the third and one in the fourth to grab a 3-1 advantage.
Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) brought in Carlos Badillo (Gurabo, PR) with a two-run blast in the third, while J.T. Pope (Mebane, NC) singled home Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) in the fourth. Francis Marion would go on to score the next 10 unanswered for the 11-3 victory.
A five-run fifth started with an RBI-single by Alex Lee (Blythewood, SC). Chris Honeycutt (Fort Mill, SC) and Tyler Cappelmann (Sumter, SC) would later pick up run-scoring singles before the final pair of runs came around on a Falcons throwing miscue.
Two in the seventh, thanks to a Jacob Wallace (Moore, SC) double and sacrifice fly off the bat of Josh Biggers (Southlake, TX), put the visitors up five before their final three came in the eighth. Honeycutt and Cappelmann again delivered with RBI-singles as the fourth and final error of the day by Pfeiffer led to the Patriots final run.
Cappelmann was perfect at the plate going 5-for-5 with a pair of RBI and run scored in the win. Honeycutt followed with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. Pfeiffer was paced by Shoemaker’s 3-for-5 day as Sandifer surrendered just nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts in the win.
The Falcons hit the road for a Wednesday night contest against another top-25 team. Pfeiffer heads to #19 UNC-Pembroke for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
