Men's Lacrosse Beats Wingate 12-11 for First Time in Six Years in Double OT Thriller; Berkompas Nets Game-Winner

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Pfeiffer University junior attack Nick Berkompas scored the game-winning goal with 1:03 remaining in the second overtime, leading the host Falcons to a 12-11 NCAA Division II menís lacrosse victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. Beating the Bulldogs for the first time in six years, the Falcons improve to 4-5 overall while Wingate drops to 3-6.
Leading 6-3 two minutes into the third quarter thanks to Dan Mesler and Ben Nielsen scored back-to-back in a 78 second span, Wingate would bounce back to score the next half-dozen to go from down three to up three in just over six minutes carrying a 9-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
Down two with less than eight minutes to play in the fourth, Mesler would score goals three and four on the day at 7:57 and 6:10 to eventually force the extra sessions. Meslerís game-tying goal came with the man advantage. After a scoreless first four minutes of overtime, Chad Olsen would deliver the pass late into the second overtime that would lead to Berkompasí game-winner.
Berkompas scored the first goal and the last goal of the game for Pfeiffer. Wingate sophomore midfielder Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) scored a career-high five goals for the visiting Bulldogs. Wingate had several late chances to end it, but Pfeiffer net minder Matt McShea and the Falcon defense came up big to force OT and get the win.
Pfeiffer now returns to Conference Carolinas play heading to St. Andrews on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons and Knights have the first face off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
