Shoemaker's Walk-Off Single Gives Baseball 9-8, 11 inning Win over #19 GCSU

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Eric Shoemaker delivered an RBI-single in the bottom of the 11th inning as Will Davis crossed the plate with the winning run in a 9-8 victory for Pfeiffer University over #19 Georgia College and State on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 17-18 while the Bobcats fall to 15-9.

In a 1-1 ballgame, Pfeiffer put four on the board in the fourth with a pair of RBI-singles by Myles Pearl and Preston Lyon. Davis capped off the frame with a two-out, two-run single. The Bobcats responded with five runs in the top of the fifth to grab a one-run lead.

After a pair of leadoff walks to Benton Yaun and Brett George, Jason Veyna blasted off scoring three to get the visitors within one. An outfield fielding error led to the other pair of runs plating in the GCSU fifth.

The Bobcats added another run in the seventh on a Shawn Ward fielder’s choice, before the Falcons tied the contest with two more runs after the seventh inning stretch. Davis picked up another RBI with a solo shot while Shoemaker doubled home Josh Strickland after his base hit. Both teams traded runs in the eighth to force extra innings as a Chandler Snell sacrifice-fly and Myles Pearl round-tripper accounted for the runs.

Both teams had quality chances in the extra frames with a runner at second and no outs, but neither could put a run across. Davis began the Pfeiffer 11th with a single, moved to second on Strickland’s sacrifice-bunt and scored on Shoemaker’s hit. The Falcons out-hit the Bobcats 17-9.

Pfeiffer gets back into Conference Carolinas action on Friday, traveling to Erskine for a critical three-game set with the Flying Fleet. A Saturday doubleheader follows the single game on Friday, slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
