MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Early scoring and late defense propelled Mars Hill College to a 10-8 victory over Pfeiffer University in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The Lions benefitted from 13 saves by goalkeeper Dylan Price (York, PA) moving to 7-3 on the year. The Falcons see their four-game win streak snapped dropping to 5-6.
Mars Hill struck first on Saturday with a pair of goals at 13:12 and 9:33 to grab a 2-0 lead. Jason Messineo (Edgewater, MD) assisted on Cade Zulak’s (Ajax, ONT) first of two on the day before Eric Benesch (Bloomingdale, ONT) notched his first from a Calvin Brien (Dameron, MD) pass. Pfeiffer’s Chad Olsen (Great Mills, MD) scored the first of his game-high five at the 6:58 mark of the first quarter as the Falcons found themselves down 2-1 after one.
T.J. Cowx (Delta, BC) pushed the Lions lead back to two with a goal three minutes into the second while Zulak and Kile Garrett (Nashville, TN) quickly made it four, 5-1, a little over halfway through the period. Messineo assisted on the first couple of strikes while Brien notched the helper on the other. Olsen would score two of the Falcons three in the period slicing the deficit down to 6-4 at the half.
Just over five minutes into period number three, Pfeiffer had come back to square the contest at six on a pair of tallies by Dan Mesler (Branchport, NY) and Olsen. The Lions would bounce back with three-straight to create their final bit of separation in the two goal victory.
Tim Burns (Downingtown, PA) found the back of the net at the six minute mark while Tyler Farmer (Calgary, ALB) registered his second of the day just two minutes later. Danny Farmer (Calgary, ALB) finished the streak with 3:51 to play in the third. Olsen would finish the period assisting on Nick Berkompas’ (Webster, NY) goal with 82 seconds left in the third.
Mars Hill’s defense stepped it up in the fourth, with help from Price, to hold on for the 10-8 win. Cowx slammed home his second just 52 seconds into the final stanza, while the defense limited the Falcons to one score by Olsen with just under four minutes remaining.
Pfeiffer will return to action next Saturday playing in their final home game of 2010. The Falcons will host Florida Southern on senior day beginning at 1:00 p.m.
