Pirate Pitching Stifles Baseball in 6-1 Loss; Pou Hit Streak Moves to 36

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Armstrong Atlantic put a pair of runs on the board in two of the first three innings on Tuesday night en route to a 6-1 over Pfeiffer University in non-conference baseball action at Sammy Cox Field on the campus of UNC-Pembroke. The win pushes the Pirates onto the 20-win plateau moving to 20-15 on the season while the Falcons strand 13 runners falling to 21-23.
AASU put the game’s initial run on the board in the first as a leadoff single by Alex Wyche (Macon, GA) followed quickly by a stolen base paid off two batters later on an RBI-single by Chris Zittrouer (Guyton, GA). A two-out bases-loaded walk by Drew Walker (Ringgold, GA) paid off later as the Pirates held a 2-0 lead after one.
The Falcons bounced back with a run in the third as Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) and Zack Pou (Stanley, NC) began the frame with back-to-back singles. Pou extended his career-high hit streak to 36 with his shot back up the box. Will Davis (New London, NC) put Pfeiffer on the board with a run-scoring double down the left-field line that brought home Pearl.
In the home half of the sixth, Wyche manufactured another Pirates run after a one-out walk and second successful swiping of second. As in the first frame, Zittrouer made it work chopping a single into left plating Wyche from second.
After a one-out double to right by Cameron Scott (Griffin, GA), Josh Wilson (Springfield, GA) came up with his second homer of the season, a two-run blast to left to put the Pirates up 4-1 through three.
Scott began the Pirates seventh reaching on a fielding error at first, later moving to third on Wilson’s double to right. Carlos Cardoza-Oquendo (San Juan, PR) promptly plated Scott on the first pitch with a groundout to short.
AASU saw Zittrouer, Scott and Wilson each pick up a pair of hits at the plate while Pou paced the Falcons going 3-for-5. Pfeiffer had chances late leaving runners in scoring position, two in back-to-back frames, in the fifth, sixth, seventh and seventh innings.
Ryan Smith (Salem, OR) picked up the win tossing 5.2 innings surrendering the one run on eight hits. In relief, Jonathan Fulghum (Sparks, GA) tossed two frames striking out five while McCreery worked the final 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Pfeiffer returns home for the final time in 2010 with a non-conference matchup against Lander beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. AASU heads to Columbus State for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series beginning at 7:00 p.m. Friday night.
