Baseball Drops Conference Finale at Anderson 3-1; Enter CC Tournament as #4 Seed Thursday
April 11, 2010
ANDERSON, S.C. - Needing a win in its final Conference Carolinas home game of the 2010 campaign to earn a spot in the league's postseason tournament, the Anderson baseball team came through with a dramatic 3-1 win past Pfeiffer Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The game ended when the Falcon's Pearl tried to stretch his clutch two-out hit into a triple but was thrown out as Trojans shortstop Thomas Padro fired the relay throw from the outfield to third baseman Blake May to beat Pearl to the bag.
Anderson (17-31, 10-13) threatened in the bottom of the first inning when senior Derek Hipp lead off with a double, but was stranded at second as the Trojans were unable to capitalize on the early opportunity.
However, Anderson did get in the scoreboard first when Padro led off the third inning with a walk, and scored when the Trojans bounced into a double play with the bases loaded.
Pfeiffer (23-25, 13-11) threatened themselves in the very next at-bat, as Davis singled to lead off the frame, but was left at third as the Falcons bounced into a double play and then bounced out to third.
The Trojans plated what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth inning on Ryan Saxon's team-leading 17th double of the season, and he crossed the plate when Ryan Kirkland followed with a single down the left field line.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard with a solo run in the sixth inning as Pass tripled and Davis' single to left-center brought him home with no outs on the board.
Anderson added an insurance run in the seventh when Chance Thomas was hi by a pitch with one out, and the miscue proved costly for the Falcons because he eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The Trojans Bryson Graydon picked up his second win of the season by hurling Anderson's fifth complete game of the season, scattering seven hits, walking two and striking out three and surrendering the one run.
The Trojans will enter the double-elimination Conference Carolinas tournament as the sixth-seed and will face top-seeded Mount Olive at 7 p.m., Thursday April 15, while the Falcons earned the fourth seed and will play No. three seed Belmont Abbey Thursday morning. The 2010 Conference Carolinas Tournament is being hosted by Barton College in Wilson, N.C.
