MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Head menís basketball coach Dave Davis will depart Pfeiffer University as ďan eraĒ comes to an end. Coach Davis has accepted the same position at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.
Although Dave is well-known and well-respected for his premier coaching authority and his unique style and reputation on the court, itís not often that a coach positively impacts the entire community the way that he has. His involvement, community service and mere presence have helped to build bridges and relationships across the region and country.† Dave, through his tireless efforts, has helped to mentor and inspire many young men and transformed them into not only extraordinary athletes, several of whom have gone on to play professionally, but remarkable world-class citizens and servant leaders.
On the court, Dave is no stranger to winning. Under his leadership, the menís basketball team finished as the nationís scoring leader in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010 and he is ranked in the top-50 nationally for the most wins and win percentages. During his 14 seasons at Pfeiffer, he has an overall record of 266-114, which includes 21 championships and two Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2000 and 2004. His teams have averaged 21 wins per season, and are in the top five in wins since 1990 in all of NCAA Division II basketball. He was named the CVAC Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999, and 2004. He was also named the NCAA East Regional Coach of the Year in 2004.
Before being named head coach at Pfeiffer, Dave was an assistant here for five years under then Head Menís Basketball Coach Bobby Lutz. As an assistant coach, Dave was instrumental in taking the team to seven straight conference championships and seven straight national tournament appearances. He came to Pfeiffer from Barton College, where the team of his own recruits won a record 25 games. He received his first head coaching position at his alma mater, Warren Wilson College, where he led that team to their highest win total in 15 years.
Daveís experience and history as Pfeiffer Universityís Head Menís Basketball Coach is legendary and his character and devotion to his players are unprecedented. We know that Newberry College is getting a great head coach and a tremendous person to lead its program. Our players, staff and entire campus and Stanly County community will miss Dave and, his wife, Pam, but we wish them great success.
Please congratulate Coach Davis on this amazing accomplishment. This is an exciting time for Newberry Ė and for Pfeiffer. Higher education administrators and decision-makers are looking to our university for their next leaders, and that speaks volumes about this universityís model reputation and our ability to prepare servant leaders.
Coach Davisí successor will be named in the near future.
