Peareth's 77 Puts Women's Golf Within Striking Distance After Day One of Falcon Cup

BADIN, N.C. – Three players each turned in rounds of 74 in round one of the 2010 Pfeiffer Falcon Cup held at the par-70, 6,057 yard Badin Inn Golf Resort. Despite breezy conditions, a dozen ladies carded rounds in the 70’s as UNC-Pembroke leads Wingate University by two heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Wingate saw two of their four scores go down as 74’s with Ashley Denton (39/35) and Samantha Pugh-Gilder (33/41) holding down the top spot with UNC-Pembroke’s Meghan Moore (35/39). Katja Dammann of UNCP and the Bulldogs Anna Lee Croom rounded out the top five, both tallying 75’s in the opening round. Dammann finished one better on the back nine turning in 38-37 while Croom registered 35-40.
Two others schools are within ten shots heading into Tuesday with Newberry College just seven back with host Pfeiffer behind by 10. Maria Luz Besio led the Wolves with back-to-back 39’s while the Lady Falcons were paced by Steph Peareth’s 77 (38/39).
The only five scores recorded in the 70’s were Mount Olive’s Valentina Urquiola with a 76 followed by Shauna Walor of UNCP, Angela Gimenez of Pfeiffer and Taylor Weaver and Natalia Perez of Newberry each carding a 79.
Field stats saw the par-3, 178-yard 11th, register as the easiest hole averaging 3.58 strokes while the lengthy 543-yard, par-5 16th claimed the most shots averaging 6.48. With a field of 50, 43 birdies were recorded in the windy round one.
The final round from the Badin Inn Golf Resort will begin on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
