Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Sophomore Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) hit a match high .500 leading Pfeiffer University to a 3-2 (25-11, 25-20, 16-25, 14-25, 15-10) victory over Mount Olive College in Conference Carolinas womenís volleyball action on Wednesday night in the Merner Gym. The Falcons needed to rally in the fifth set after winning the first two to hold off the Trojans comeback attempt. Pfeiffer gets its first win of the season now 1-10 overall, 1-4 in league play, while Mount Olive falls to 3-9, 1-3.

Pfeiffer had their best start all year in the first two sets hitting .522 in the opener and .412 in the second. Ovbey started her career night off with the very first kill of the evening before senior Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) put down three early kills and added an ace for a 7-5 advantage. The Trojans Erika Conner (Marion, IA) ended Mordiniís run with a kill that put the visitors within two. Two more Ovbey kills, along with a pair from Anna Vizvary (North Augusta, SC), sent the hosts on a six point run. Pfeiffer would then put together late scoring streaks of four, three and three to outscore the Trojans 16-4.

Mordini handled game two for Pfeiffer hitting a perfect 5-for-5 in the tight set. An early throw down by the senior put the Lady Falcons up one before the Trojans grabbed a two-point advantage off an Ashlee Reuter (Durand, IL) kill at 11-9. A service ace from Kailey Preece (Vineland, ONTARIO) knotted the contest at 14 apiece in front of a Lauren Lee (Mount Olive, NC) ace that put the Trojans back up one. After a Pfeiffer timeout, Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) would lead the comeback with a pair of kills combined with three-straight Trojan miscues to end set two.

Set three saw Mount Olive turn things around in the hitting department with a .422 percentage to stave off a sweep. A brief 4-4 tie quickly broken up by Reuterís kill gave the guests a lead for good in the third stanza. Carly White (Shallotte, NC) had a pair of kills midway through before Conner got back in the action with two more of her 13 kills on the night for a 23-13 lead. Three Pfeiffer errors over the final five plays gave the Trojans a 25-16 set win.

Mount Olive continued to roll in set number four jumping out to a 4-0 lead on two Lady Falcon errors and pair of Conner kills that forced an early timeout. The Trojans then quickly jumped out on an 8-0 run, fueled by two White attacks and four Pfeiffer errors, for a 12-2 lead. Lee would chip in with two more late kills, amidst more Lady Falcon mistakes, to force a decisive fifth set.

Of Pfeifferís 15 total team blocks on the night, none were more important than the first two starting the final set. Ovbey combined on both of them, with Vizvary and Amerell, for a 2-0 head start. After a quick ace by Conner, Pfeifferís Jordan O'Bryant (Reidsville, NC) would give the Lady Falcons a lead for good with one of her four kills on the night at 6-5. From O'Bryantís kill, four-straight errors by Mount Olive put the hosts up five. Feliz Ramirez (San Antonio, TX) tried to bring the visitors back with an ace at 13-9, but Ovbey and Vizvary would shut the door with their last kills for a 15-10 set and match win for the Lady Falcons. Pfeiffer hit .545 in the final set.

Ovbey led all participants with 14 kills on the night followed closely by Mordini, White and Conner who each had 13. Setter Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) led the way with 40 assists while Preece had 34 for the Trojans. Mount Olive had nine team blocks on the evening, all coming on combined stuffs.

Both teams get back on the court Saturday as Pfeiffer hosts Coker at 1:00 p.m. while Mount Olive will entertain Erskine at 2:00 p.m.
