September 25, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University needed three second half goals and the game-winner in the 87th minute to defeat Limestone College 3-2 in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) notched the final two tallies as the Lady Falcons improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in league play with the comeback win. The Lady Saints see their record dip to 2-4-1, 1-2.
In a 2-2 contest, Wombwell lined up for a corner kick in the 87th minute. Taking the shot from the far side, Wombwell’s attempt found the back of the net on its own with 3:06 remaining for the game-winner.
Earlier in the match, Limestone carried a 1-0 lead into the half as Vanessa Jarrett (Ottawa, ONTARIO) headed home her third of the year on assists from Lauren Lanham (Gaffney, SC) and Ashley Alderin-Fleagle (Kernersville, NC). A long pass from Alderin-Fleagle and cross into the box by Lanham led to Jarrett’s header just under the crossbar.
Just past the hour in the 63rd minute, Alderin-Fleagle made it a two-goal game with her second of the season. The midfielder corralled a loose ball and fired a shot into the top left corner for the 2-0 lead.
Pfeiffer got on the board just 1:02 later as Sheena Regan (Chesapeake, VA) took the ball down the middle of the field and quickly found the back of the net slicing the Lady Falcon deficit in half. Wombwell scored her first of the day and sixth of the year just 63 seconds later notching the equalizer on an assist from Lindsey Godwin (Raleigh, NC). Wombwell then finished off the Lady Saints with the game-winner in the 87th minute.
Pfeiffer out-shot Limestone 13-7 as Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) made a pair of saves in net for the win. Pfeiffer will return to action on Tuesday hosting Mount Olive for another league tilt at 2:00 p.m.
