September 25, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Limestone’s Lee Smyth (Somerset, ENGLAND) tallied the game-winner in the 105th minute of double overtime as the Saints scored a 2-1 Conference Carolinas victory over Pfeiffer University in men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. The victory moves the Saints to 5-3 overall, 2-1 in league play. The Falcons, playing their fifth overtime contest in seven matches, fall to 1-3-2, 1-2.
Scoreless through a majority of regulation, Pfeiffer struck first at 76:23 as Fahret Salihovic (Charlotte, NC) blasted a shot from 30 yards out, bouncing his attempt of the left post and in, putting the Falcons ahead 1-0. Five minutes later in the 82nd minute, Tom Morris (Berkshire, ENGLAND) notched the tying goal with a header from a Keegan Ziada (Melbourne, AUSTRALIA) corner kick for a 1-1 match.
With just over five minutes remaining in the second extra session, Smyth grabbed a loose ball at midfield and deflected his shot in the cage off the right post for the game-winner. In a scoreless first 10 minutes of overtime, Pfeiffer out-shot the Saints 4-1.
Winless now in five overtime matches, Pfeiffer will return to action on Tuesday hosting Mount Olive for another league tilt at 2:00 p.m.
