Mele's Tally and Defense All Women's Soccer Needs in 1-0 Win at Lees-McRae
October 2, 2010
BANNER ELK, N.C. – Pfeiffer University freshman Serae Mele (Rio Rancho, NM) put home the only goal of the contest in the ninth minute of play leading the Lady Falcons to a 1-0 road win at Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon. The win pushes Pfeiffer a game over .500 overall at 5-4, standing at 3-1 in league play. The loss sends the Lady Bobcats to 8-3, 4-2.
Mele wasted little time in scoring at the 8:29 mark of the opening half receiving a loose ball coming in from the corner and finding the far post for the strike. The tally was one of just three shots on goal for the Lady Falcons as net minder Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) turned away eight Lees-McRae shots in the first shutout of the year.
The Lady Bobcats had twice as many overall shots than their on-goal total, with the best opportunity coming in the 87th minute. Lees-McRae’s Vickie Rich tried for the equalizer but clanked her shot of the post. Alcala made four saves in each half as the Lady Falcon defense held strong in front.
Pfeiffer will get back to action on Wednesday night traveling to cross-town rival Catawba for a key region matchup. The mid-week contest is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
