Four School Records Drown as Swimming Has Great Weekend at Fall Frenzy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University men’s swim team broke four school records finishing seventh at the 2010 Fall Frenzy hosted by Wingate at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center this weekend. The women finished eighth missing their own school record setting performance by two-tenths of a second.

The two-day event began with a near miss by the Lady Falcons setting the table for the weekend. Jillian Kniffen, Haley Carter, Morgan Dionne and Yukina Onoda just missed breaking a 15 year old record in the 200 freestyle. The quartet came up short on the record by just by .22 seconds.

Charlie Melesh started breaking the first of two school records beginning with the 500 freestyle in event four. Melesh broke the old time set two years ago by teammate Edwin Torres by more than five seconds clocking in with a 4:42.10 to finish third overall out of 34 competitors.

George Moreno followed up Melesh’s record-breaking swim with a new record of his own in the 50 free. Moreno concluded with a new record-setting time of 21.58 finishing fourth out of 59 swimmers. Moreno topped the 21-month old record by .04 to end the morning session on day one.

Two school records plummeted during the final event of day one in the night session’s 800 freestyle relay. Melesh, swimming the first leg, topped the individual record with a time of 1:44.80 while teammates Moreno, Torres and Andrew Corley combined to shatter the old record by more than six seconds. The four men finished with a time of 7:09.15 touching sixth out of 21 teams.

Day two saw Jim Roddenbery miss out on the 200 breaststroke record by less than a second with 2:15.93 while Melesh fell short of his third record for the weekend by the same slim margin in the 200 butterfly.

Both teams will now take more than a month off from competitive swimming until their New Year’s Eve noon matinee at St. Leo.
