Falcon Swimming Ends 2010 with Split Decisions at St. Leo

ST. LEO, F.L. – Before ringing in the New Year, Pfeiffer University split a pair of swimming decision on their winter break trip to Florida and St. Leo University. The Falcon men scored a 240-196 victory while the Lady Falcons fell 266-146 to the Lady Lions. Pfeiffer scored five race wins, all on the men’s side, in the 20-event meet.

The trio of Charlie Melesh, Zach McMichael and George Moreno scored the first victory of the afternoon in the 300-yard butterfly. Pfeiffer’s “A” relay team bested St. Leo by more than three and a half seconds. The Falcons snagged the top two spots during the next 300 backstroke relay as Melesh teamed up with Kevin Parks and Andrew Corley for the win. Torres, Matt Money and Mark Franz finished right behind in second.

The relay wins continued for the Falcons in the 800 freestyle as Moreno, Melesh, Corley and Torres registered the win by more than 16 seconds over the Lions. Torres would later score the only individual win of the afternoon in the 400 individual medley before scoring the final relay win in the 400 free. Torres, Moreno, Melesh and Jim Roddenbery all contributed in the final victory.

On the women’s side, Pfeiffer notched three second place finishing during the relays and in one individual event. The first runner-up position for the ladies came in the 300 backstroke. Shelby Carrion, Vera DeFusco and Melissa Roberts came up just short of the top spot. Two events later in the 800 free, Morgan Dionne, Jillian Kniffen, Haley Carter and Samantha Maness would do the same.

The final relay second-place finish came in the 400 medley relay as St. Leo edged the team of Yukina Onoda, Kniffen, Carrion and Carter during the final sprints. Kniffen notched the lone individual finish in second concluding the 400 IM in just over 4:41.

Next up in the first month of 2011 will be a dual meet at Mars Hill on Saturday, January 15th. The Falcons will face their second-straight Lions mascot at 12:00 p.m.
