MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Queens needed eight blocks on Saturday night to help sneak away with an 83-77 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action in the Merner Gym. The Royals move to 9-4 overall, 5-0 in league play winning their eighth-straight contest. The Falcons, losers of three-in-a-row, fall to 6-7, 4-2.
Pfeiffer used three free throws for an early lead in the first minute of play after a personal foul and technical foul was charged to the visitor’s bench. Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, NC) would knock down a jumper and triple to put the Royals up a pair 5-3, but both teams started to trade the lead from there until the final minutes of the half. After a layup by Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, FL) put the Falcons even at 31-31 with 4:08 to play, Queens would end the half on a 9-1 run for an eight-point halftime lead. Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, NC) had four of the Royals nine points in that stretch.
Early in the second half, Hollinger would drive the lane for another easy lay in that brought the Falcons to within four 49-45. Hopkins would then hit another one of Queens’ 12 triples on the night to extend the lead back to seven. Hopkins would later connect on a rare four-point play to put the visitors back up 11 with 13:32 remaining. Pfeiffer would slice the lead back to four on four different occasions, finally taking advantage with just over three minutes remaining.
After a Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) layup, Hollinger would hit a pair of free throws that cut the lead down to two. Woods would turn around and take advantage of the Royals 12th foul of the half and knock down two of his five free throws on the night for a 75-75 game with 2:47 to go. For the second-straight game, the Falcons would have late chances to grab the late lead, but failed to take advantage as a Daniel Bailey (Irmo, SC) jumper and late free throws sealed the win for the visitors.
Hopkins finished with a game high 27, one of four Royals in double-figures. Bailey finished with 14, David Mason (Decatur, GA) 12 and Brent Evans (Beaufort, SC) with 11. For Pfeiffer, Hollinger led all with 26, Woods posted his sixth-straight double-double with 17 points and 11 boards while Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) dropped in 14.
Pfeiffer will look to snap its three-game skid with a Tuesday night trip to St. Andrews. The Falcons and host Knights will tip at 7:30 p.m.
