WASHINGTON, DC - Junior guard Nigel Munson (Washington, DC) converted four free throws over the final nine seconds to lift the University of the District of Columbia over Pfeiffer University 97-96 in non-conference menís basketball action at the UDC Sports Complex. It was the second Firebirds win over the Falcons during the 2010-11 season as they improve to 6-12 while the Falcons drop to 7-10.
Brandon Herbert (Baltimore, MD) paced the Firebirds to the win with 27 points going 10-of-15 from the floor with six three-pointers. Munson followed with 21 points and nine assists. Tim Ellison (Alexandria, VA) added 18 points and seven rebounds while Brandon Ennis (Ontario, Canada) chipped in 11.
The Firebirds had the momentum in the first half of the game taking a 55-53 lead into the halftime break. Three Firebirds had already reached double-digits before the break.
The momentum swung in the second half as Pfeiffer senior forward Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) began to exploit the Firebirds inside post weakness to score 31 of his 38 points in the half while grabbing 10 rebounds. The Falcons substituted liberally in the half, finally knotting the score at 62 with 15:46 remaining, then taking a 65-62 lead at the 14:53 mark.
The Firebirds bent but would not break as a series of shots by Herbert, Munson and Ellison kept the game close, but the Woods kept the Falcons in the game with 10 offensive rebounds and his 31-point scoring spurt. A critical Falcon foul by Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, FL) with two seconds remaining in the game sent Munson to the free-throw line to seal the win for the Firebirds.
Pfeiffer dominated the boards, pulling down 42 rebounds to UDC's 31. Pfeiffer also held the advantage in bench points 24-11, 2nd chance points 19-6 and points scored in the paint 38-20. Woods finished with 38 points with 13 boards while Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) had 19 with Elijah Matthews putting in 13.
Pfeiffer returns home on Wednesday night to host Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action at 7:30 p.m.
