League Office Announces Men's Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll; Falcons Selected Sixth

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Lees-McRae College finished the 2010 season with a 16-6 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark in Conference Carolinas play, earning the program’s second consecutive regular season league title. The Bobcats then won the conference tournament, punching the school’s second straight NCAA Tournament ticket, as No. 24 Lees-McRae defeated Anderson University in the first round of NCAA Southeast Region play before falling to Armstrong Atlantic State University. Nandor Solymosi returns for his senior campaign after earning all-conference first team honors last season. The Falcons of Pfeiffer University have been selected sixth in the nine-team league.

“It’s going to be tough to meet the preseason expectations after losing four of the top six players from last year’s conference championship team,” said head coach Keith Turner. “I have some talented players on this year’s team that I feel are ready to step into the lineup and take on the challenge of trying to repeat. It will be very important for seniors Solymosi and Travis Van Hoy to lead by example, and hopefully their experience carries over to the rest of the team.”

Queens University of Charlotte finished the 2010 season with a 10-6 overall record and a 4-5 conference record to earn the No. 6 seed in the Conference Carolinas tournament. Going into the tournament on a three-game winning streak, the Royals were unable to sustain the momentum, falling to Mount Olive in the quarterfinals.

Individually, Christiaan Lee-Daigle and reigning conference Freshman of the Year Joshua Bloch will be looked on to lead the Royals in the top flights. Looking to display their depth, the Royals will also rely on incoming graduate student David Hannon to provide a spark in the mid-flight matches. In doubles action, the Royals will be anchored by the duo of Lee-Daigle and Raahil Dhruva who finished 9-2 in 2010. Royals head coach Brett Karpman is proud of his players’ work ethic and commitment and is “excited to watch this squad compete.”

Following a 12-11 overall record and a 6-3 league mark last season, Limestone College men’s tennis team has been picked to finish third in Conference Carolinas as released in the leagues 2011 Preseason Poll.

New head coach Rodney McAlister returns a number of prominent starters for this year’s squad, including senior Miguel Lopez Zuniga and junior Mike Stephenson. Zuniga posted an overall mark of 14-6 in singles competition at the No. 1 spot and went 6-2 in Conference Carolinas action while notching a 13-9 doubles mark. Stephenson went 13-7 in singles play, going 11-4 at No. 2 and 2-3 at the top position  as he notched a 6-1 record against Conference Carolinas opponents. In doubles action he was 14-9 with a 12-6 mark at No. 3 and went 6-2 in conference competition.

Rounding out the men's tennis preseason poll 4-9 is: Barton, Mount Olive, Pfeiffer, Erskine, Coker, and Belmont Abbey respectively.
