Gilliard Drops a Career-High 29 on Mount Olive as Men's Basketball Cruises 102-90

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. Ė Mount Olive led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but Pfeiffer rallied to take the lead for good midway through the second half to defeat the Trojans 102-90 in Conference Carolinas menís basketball Wednesday at Kornegay Arena. Davon Gilliard scored a game and career-high 29 points off the bench for Pfeiffer, while Chris Woods notched a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Dory Hines scored a career-high 28 points for Mount Olive, while Brandon Allen added 23 points and Derek Staton finished with 20 points and eight assists.
Mount Olive (10-10 overall, 5-7 Conference Carolinas) battled back from an early six-point deficit and took a 47-37 lead on Hinesí putback with 2:46 left in the first half. Pfeiffer (9-11, 7-5) got as close as four points before Allen hit a three-pointer with 47 seconds left. Woods hit a short jumper with 24 seconds left to cut the Trojans lead to 51-46 at the half.
Mount Olive extended its lead to eight points early in the second half before a fastbreak dunk by Reggie Hollinger and a three-pointer by Josh Humphrey pulled Pfeiffer within 56-53 with 16:51 left to play. Allen hit a pair of free throws for Mount Olive and Statonís three-pointer gave the Trojans a 65-58 lead with 15:06 remaining. But Mount Olive would be held without a field goal over the next four-plus minutes as Pfeiffer went ahead to stay.
Vonte Eafordís three-pointer with 13:24 left tied the game and Hollingerís three-ball 35 seconds later completed a run of 10 unanswered points and gave Pfeiffer a 68-65 lead. Hines answered with a pair of free throws to pull Mount Olive within a point, but Woodsí layup with 8:25 left capped an 11-3 run and gave the Falcons a 79-70 lead. The margin never fell below five points the rest of the way.
Allen, who scored 14 of his points in the second half, pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Mahamed Ibrahim dished out a career-high seven assists, while Hines added six assists. The Trojans shot 65.4 percent from the field (17-for-26) in the first half, but were held to 37.5 percent shooting in the second half.
Hollinger finished with 17 points for Pfeiffer, which placed five players in double figures. Humphrey scored 13 points and Eaford added 10 points off the bench. Gilliard and Jeff Pettiway recorded six assists apiece for the Falcons, which shot 60.0 percent (30-for-50) from the field for the game.
Mount Olive returns to action Thursday as the Trojans travel to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. Pfeiffer plays host to Belmont Abbey Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
