WILSON, N.C. -The Pfeiffer University softball team scored 11 of its combined 15 runs in its last at bats to sweep host Barton College by scores of 9-5 and 6-1 (8) on Sunday afternoon at the Gillette Athletic Complex. The Lady Falcons (2-6 Overall) used late inning heroics in each game for their first two wins on the season. The Lady Bulldogs (3-9) surrendered a total of nine unearned runs on the day. The doubleheader marked the Conference Carolinas openers for both programs.

Barton junior Autumn Herrin (Pasadena, Md.) led all players with five hits and five assists, including several highlight reel plays at shortstop. Senior Sarah Waylock (Cary, Ill.) and juniors Melanie Conklin (Wellington, Ohio) and Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, Ariz.) all went deep to pace Pfeiffer. Conklin and Patterson each totaled four RBI.

GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 9, Barton 5

The Bulldogs maintained a 5-1 lead late but the Falcons scored twice in the sixth inning and six times in the seventh to rally for the 9-5 win in the opener. Waylock put the visitors on the board first with a solo shot to right to lead off the top of the fourth but Barton responded with five runs in the home half. The Bulldogs capitalized on three Falcon errors in the frame with clutch hits that included a two-run bloop single by junior Stacy Wade (Snow Hill, N.C.) and RBI-singles by Herrin and junior Kendall Street (Bertie, N.C.).

Pfeiffer cut the deficit in half with back-to-back doubles in the sixth including a two-run two bagger by Conklin before soaring into the lead with six runs in the seventh. The outburst featured a bases loaded walk, two sacrifice flies, and a pair of run producing singles. Due to two outfield errors, four of the runs were unearned. Sophomore Elizabeth Webb (Wilson, N.C.) was tagged with the loss allowing eight runs (four earned) in the final 3 2/3. Herrin was a perfect 3-for-3 including a double. Wade followed with two singles.

GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 6, Barton 1 (8 innings)

The only error of the second game kept the eighth inning going for Pfeiffer and the Falcons took advantage with five unearned runs to win the nightcap 6-1.

With the bases full and two outs, freshman Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, N.C.) put the visitors ahead with a seeing-eyed, two-run single just past the reach of the first baseman. Patterson added three insurance runs with a deep blast to left. Jackson produced a game-high three singles. Junior Emily Jordan (Goldsboro, N.C.) once again pitched well enough to win for the Lady Bulldogs in another complete game performance. Jordan only allowed one earned run, a solo home to Conklin in the third, but suffered the loss.

Conklin picked up the win for Pfeiffer not issuing a base on balls over eight innings. Conklin and Jordan each had five strikeouts for their respective clubs. BCs lone run came in the fourth. After a single by Webb and a double by freshman Samantha Colein (Hyattsville, Md.), Herrin knocked in Webb with a single to left. Webb and Herrin accounted for four of the Bulldogs six hits, lacing two singles apiece.

Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday heading to UNC-Pembroke for a 2:00 p.m. twinbill.
