Men's Volleyball Crushes School Record for Aces; Mahan Sets Individual Mark in 3-0 Romp of Shock

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Pfeiffer University smashed a school record with 16 aces cruising to a 3-0 (25-5, 25-10, 25-14) victory over Washington Adventist in non-conference mens volleyball on Friday afternoon. The Falcons crushed the old aces mark of seven in the 2011 home-opening victory improving to 6-4 on the year. The visiting Shock fell to 1-5.

Pfeiffer bolted out to an 8-0 thanks to three-straight aces served up by Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA). Three-straight Shock errors, an ace by Micah Bortner (Dallastown, PA) and kill from Drew Burdette (Greer, SC) put the Falcons up 16-3 in front of final kills by Josh Mahan (Victor, NY) and Lance Johnson (Harrisburg, PA) closing out set one. Washington Adventist received their five points in the set from Falcon errors.

In set two, Pfeiffer jumped out in front 3-1 on a kill from Bortner with libero Mark Hess (Lebanon, PA) assisting on the play which moved to a 10-1 start with three aces from Mahan and a kill from Kyle Mariano (Kendall Park, NJ). Blake Dowdle (Farmington, NY) put down a kill midway through the middle set for a 16-4 contest before two Eric Edelman (Henrietta, NY) kills and a Kevin Anderson (Greensboro, NC) ace finished off the Shock in set two.

Buck Boswell (Midlothian, VA) would throw down an early kill in set three to put the hosts up 6-0 while a later ace from Michael McLaughlin (Aliquippa, PA) gave the Falcons an eventual 15-5 lead. Kills from Boswell, McLauglin and Mahan helped finalize the sweep while the final blow was delivered by Johnson on the 16th ace of the match.

Mahan finished with a team-high and new school record five aces in the win. Mariano led in the kills department with eight while McLaughlin recorded 19 assists. As a team, Pfeiffer hit .455 in the win which includes a .625 mark in set one followed by a .526 percentage in set two.

Pfeiffer will return to their home floor next Saturday, March 5th for a 2:00 p.m. matchup against NJIT.
