Conklin Throws Perfect Game in Opener; Hits Two Homers in Six RBI Day as Softball Sweeps St. Andrews

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) tossed a six-inning perfect game and put together a 5-for-7 day at the plate with a pair of home runs and six RBI as the Lady Falcons swept St. Andrews Presbyterian College 8-0 and 9-1 in Conference Carolinas softball action on Saturday afternoon. Pfeiffer improves to 6-8 overall, 4-0 in league play while the Lady Knights fall to 2-11, 0-4.

In the opener, Conklin went 18-up, 18-down in the perfect game with 10 strikeouts over her six innings of work. Of the eight balls put in play, Conklin received six outs from fly balls and two from a pair of groundballs.

Conklin started the three-run first frame with a double to left-center, later moving to third on Celia Dew’s (Sanford, NC) base hit to left. Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL) drove both in with a double down the left-field line to put the Lady Falcons up 2-0. Waylock eventually scored the final run of the frame on a Lady Knights throwing error.

Pfeiffer tacked on another run in the fourth on another Conklin double that plated Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) after her infield single to leadoff. The Lady Falcons tallied the final four runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab the six-inning win.

Johnson started the inning with another infield single to third, moving to second on a St. Andrews wild pitch. Conklin promptly followed with a 275 foot home run to straight-away center for a 6-0 Pfeiffer advantage. Another SAPC error led to the seventh run of the opener while a Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC) single to left scored Shelby Brown (South Hill, VA) to end game one.

Conklin and Dew paced the Lady Falcons with three hits in the first contest while Waylock, Johnson and Andrea Wagner (Wauseon, OH) each had two. Conklin wrapped up with a team-high three RBI in the opener in addition to her perfect game in the circle.

After the intermission, the Lady Knights jumped on the board in the top of the first with a run on three hits. Becky Brandenburg (Swansboro, NC) and Lex Cowger (Indian Head, MD) came up with back-to-back one out base hits before a Megan Soots (Mount Holly, NC) sacrifice bunt. Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, MD) scored Brandenburg later in the frame on an infield single to second.

Pfeiffer’s response of nine unanswered runs began in the second as Wagner scored via Lady Knights error after reaching with a leadoff walk. Conklin responded on her own later in the frame with a three-run blast to center to put the hosts up 4-1.

After an RBI-single by Brown in the third, four more in the fourth helped Pfeiffer end the sweep early on Saturday afternoon. Conklin started with an infield single to first and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Dew. After pinch-hitter Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) drew a free pass to first, Waylock just missed a three-run bomb to center as her fly ball hit off the top of the fence and back into play for a long RBI-single that scored Conklin from second. Wagner delivered the final blow with a two-run double to left before later scoring on the final SAPC error of the day.

Braswell earned the game two victory in the circle going the distance allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Conklin and Brown had had two hits in the nightcap while Conklin again led the way with three RBI.

Behind Conklin’s total in the DH sweep, Dew also put together a fantastic day at the plate going 5-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.

Pfeiffer will now head to Brevard on Sunday afternoon for another pair of games against the Tornados. First pitch in the mountains is set for 2:00 p.m.
