WILSON, N.C. ó Pfeiffer University held on for a 4-1 win in the opener and then exploded for a 13-3 victory in the nightcap to complete a Conference Carolinas doubleheader sweep of host Barton College at Nixon Field on Saturday afternoon.† The Falcons snapped a five-game losing streak, improving to 7-9 overall. The Bulldogs fell to 4-10. Barton and Pfeiffer will wrap up its Conference Carolinas opening three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
Junior shortstop Preston Lyon (Gastonia, N.C.) went deep for the Falcons in the first game while senior Matt Willis (Wilmington, N.C.) hit Bartonís first homer of the season in the finale.
Senior Jordan Smith (Longmont, Colo.) and freshman Zac Crumpler (Wilson, N.C.) paced the Bulldogs with three hits each.
GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 4, Barton 1
Pfeiffer broke a late 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh and then got out of bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the 4-1 win.
The Bulldogs filled the bases with no outs on singles by Crumpler and sophomore Clay Martin (Pittsboro, N.C.) followed by a walk by freshman John Hunter (Hertford, N.C.). Pfeiffer senior Luke Wilhelm (Lexington, N.C.) recorded his second save of the season by inducing a pair of groundball outs including a game-ending double play.
The Falcons were able to produce three runs against Barton sophomore ace Kyle Norville (Tarboro, N.C.) on three singles and two walks. Senior Hunter Boehme (Winston-Salem, N.C.) drew a bases-loaded walk to produce the go-ahead run and classmate Tyler Smith (Locust, N.C.) provided a clutch two-run single to left.
Barton took the early lead on a junior Ryan Daughtry (Princeton, N.C.) double that hit off the right-center field fence scoring classmate Chris Rawlings (Charlotte, N.C.) from first. Daughtry then kept the Bulldogs ahead with a web gem, reaching over the right field fence and robbing senior Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, N.C.) of a home run in the second.†
Lyon finally knotted the score with a solo blast to left in the fourth. Lyonís leadoff long ball was his second of the season.
Junior starter Eric Shuford (Shelby, N.C.) earned the win on the mound pitching into the ninth. Shuford (2-1) fanned seven Bulldogs to increase his league leading strikeout total to 33 on the early season.
Norville (1-1) was tagged with the loss in the complete-game effort. The crafty lefty only allowed five hits and two walks over nine strong with one strikeout.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 13, Barton 3
After both teams traded lone runs in both the first and second innings, Pfeiffer pulled away with an eight-run third before coasting to the 13-3 victory.
The Falcons scored a season-most 13 runs on 12 hits and seven walks. The decisive frame included the first eight batters reaching base safely. Dunn and sophomore Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, N.C.) both ripped two-run base hits and a Yates RBI-double was the lone extra-base hit of the stanza.
Pfeiffer completed its scoring with three more runs in the fourth. Yates was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Dunn was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Sophomore Bryan Tuttle (Lenoir, N.C.) was credited with the win tossing the first four innings. Tuttle (2-2) tallied four strikeouts before handing the ball off to a trio of relievers that each pitched one scoreless frame.
Freshman starter Jimmie Davis (Elizabethtown, N.C.) was chased after two-plus innings after getting tagged for seven runs (six earned) on five hits and three walks. Freshman Phillip Cotten (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) held the visitors off the board for the final three innings in his first collegiate appearance.
Smith flirted with a cycle with a triple, double, and a single but was denied a fourth plate appearance with the nightcap only being a seven-inning schedule game. Willis ripped a pinch-hit homer to right-center in the fourth. Willisí bomb in his first at bat of the season marked the Bulldogs first dinger of the season.
