Woods Moves Into 2,000-Point Club with Game-High 32 in Win over Erskine; Men's Basketball Carries #5 Seed, Travels to Coker on Monday

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Senior forward Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) joined an exclusive club on Saturday night as his game-high 32 points allowed him to eclipse the 2,000-point mark for his career as Pfeiffer University scored an 83-74 win over Erskine College in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action on Saturday night. The Falcons improve to 11-15 overall, 9-9 in league play and will hold the fifth-seed in Monday night’s tournament opener traveling to #4 Coker at 7:00 p.m. The Flying Fleet see their season end at 3-23, 1-17.
Pfeiffer jumped out to a nine-point, 19-10 lead after a breakaway dunk from Woods at the 14:06 mark. Erskine responded with a pair of three’s from Jake Haslem (Lithia, FL) and Filip Pejovic (Prijepolje, SERBIA) to slice the lead down to 19-16 at the midway point.
Both teams would trade leads until the final four minutes of the half as another jumper by Woods put the Falcons up a pair with 3:36 left, eventually carrying a six-point lead into the break after a jumper from Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD).
Woods made history 2:27 into the second half notching his 2,000th career point on layup after an assist from Pettiway, a fellow senior recognized before the game. Down by as much as 10, Erskine cut it back down to three on a layup from Chris Gore (Myrtle Beach, SC) with 9:57 remaining and down to one after a Travis Liner (Charlotte, NC) bucket with 6:43 to go.
After another dunk from Woods and lay in by Davon Gillard (Charleston, SC), a triple by Pejovic made it another one possession game with 4:20 left. From there, Pfeiffer outscored the Flying Fleet 10-3 with a pair of late free throws from Pettiway and Kyler Gregory (Gibsonville, NC) to seal the win.
Woods led all with his 32 points and 12 rebounds while Pettiway finished with 15 followed by Gregory’s 11. Casey Sorrell (Walton, KY) paced the Flying Fleet with 18 while Pejovic converted 15 with Liner’s 11.
The Falcons shot 51% in the victory dominating the rebound margin 42-23. Pfeiffer also took care of business from the free throw line making 20 free attempts to Erskine’s eight.
