Waylock Leads Softball to Game One Win at Brevard; Lady Falcons Fall in 7th of Game Two

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team split a doubleheader with the Pfeiffer University Falcons on Sunday afternoon at the Brevard College Softball Field. The Tornados came back in the opener from down 2-0 to force extra innings but fell 3-2 in eight innings of play. The Tornados let up a 4-0 lead in the final two innings but were able to edge the Falcons 5-4 with a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh. The Tornados moved to 11-5 on the season after splitting with Pfeiffer, while the Falcons are now 7-9 on the season.

Game One: Pfeiffer 3, Brevard 2 (8 Innings)

Brevard was unable to get the bats going in the first game as they didnít plate a run until the bottom of the fourth, but Pfeiffer was able to get on the board early scoring in the opening inning. Sarah Waylock hit an RBI single, scoring Melanie Conklin from second to give Pfeiffer the early 1-0 lead.

The Falcons added to their lead in the third when Waylock drove in another run. She hit an RBI double to right centerfield scoring Conklin again, putting Pfeiffer up 2-0.

Brevard was able to answer in the fourth. Becca Curlee singled home Chelsi Mallory making it 2-1 in favor of the Falcons.

Curlee doubled to lead off the seventh, and moved to third on a wild pitch, setting the stage for Sarah Carlos. Carlos hit an RBI single up the middle to tie things up 2-2.

After getting a quick two outs in the top of the eighth, Martika Elmore was touched by Kirsten Patterson for a double, plating the runner placed at second in extra innings, which gave the Falcons the 3-2 edge.

Elmore was the Tornados starter and pitched all eight innings. She fell to 5-3 on the season after allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits. She set down 11 on strikes and walked just three in the loss. Conklin recorded the win for Pfeiffer in relief. She went 1.2 innings and didnít allow a hit.
Curlee led the offense going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Carlos provided the other RBI for the Tornados.

Game Two: Brevard 5, Pfeiffer 4

Brevard was able to jump out on top in the second game in the third when they struck first. Meredith Davenport led the third off with a single to left field. Brittany Fowler was able to pick up a base hit on an attempted sacrifice bunt, moving Davenport to second. After Kayla Dorsey moved both runners up a bag with a sacrifice bunt, Mallory stepped into the batters box.
Mallory slugged a triple to right centerfield scoring both Davenport and Fowler, making it 2-0 in favor of the Tornados. Mallory later scored on a wild pitch in the same inning to make it 3-0.

The Tornados struck again in the fourth when Ally Davenport made it on after she singled up the middle. Davenport moved up to second on another wild pitch, and then advanced to third when her twin-sister Meredith Davenport grounded out. Fowler stepped into the batterís box and singled to left field, scoring Ally Davenport from third.

Alyssa Miller took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Tornados before she was touched in the nightcap of the twinbill. The Falcons were able to score on a single by Andrea Wagner, which plated Celia Dew to make it 4-1 as they went into the last inning of the game.

Pfeiffer tied it up in the seventh when Dew hit a three-run homer to dead centerfield, plating Conklin, Amber Johnson, and herself. It was 4-4 as the Tornados went to bat in the bottom of the seventh.

Brittany Fowler led off the inning and reached on an error by the second baseman. Kayla Dorsey was able to move Fowler to second on a sacrifice bunt. Chelsi Mallory advanced Fowler to third in the next at-bat by grounding out to second, setting the table for Kayla Clemens. Clemens roped a single back up the middle to plate the final run of the game, giving Brevard a 5-4 win over the Falcons in the second game.
