March 1, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University shot just 38% from the field on Tuesday night handing Queens a 70-62 victory in the first round of the 2011 Conference Carolinas women’s basketball tournament inside the Merner Gym. The fifth-seeded Royals scored 21 points off of turnovers improving to 14-13 on the season while the fourth-seeded Lady Falcons see their season end at 14-13.
Trailing early, sophomore Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) would knock down a three with 11:15 remaining in the first half to put Pfeiffer up one, 14-13. After a Melissa Thomas (Havelock, NC) basket put the visitors up three at the halfway point, Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA) would convert a layup to put the Lady Falcons back up by one. Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) would put Pfeiffer up five, 32-27 with 2:48 left in the half until Queens tallied the next five with a pair of free throws from Erin Goldner (Matthews, NC) for a 32-all contest at the break.
Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, NC) put Queens up six 2:51 into the second half until Pfeiffer roared back with two triples from Celeste Caudill (Sparta, NC) knotting the game up at 42. Caudill’s triple and a pair of Rhoney free throws capped off a 10-0 Lady Falcon run. Queens would take the lead for good on a late whistle that allowed Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, NC) to complete a three-point play shifting momentum for the final seven minutes.
Cox led all scorers with 19 points on the night followed closely by Harvey’s 18. Caudill finished the night with 11 for the Lady Falcons. Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, NC) led the Royals with 17.
Turnovers were key on Tuesday as Pfeiffer dominated the rebound margin 37-29. The Lady Falcons struggled from behind the arc going just 5-of-13 while converting 75% of their free throw attempts.
