Lyon's Three-Run Doubles Propels Baseball Past #23 Catawba 9-1

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) opened up a 3-1 ballgame with a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fourth as the Falcons claimed a 9-1 win over #23 Catawba in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field. The victory sends Pfeiffer to 9-10 overall while Catawba drops to 12-4.
A two-out single by Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC) put the Falcons on the board 1-0 in the first. After a leadoff homer by Matt Wade (Chapel Hill, NC) and a RBI-groundout by Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) put Pfeiffer up 3-0 in the second, Catawba tallied their lone run later in the fourth on a two-out triple by Chris Dula (Troutman, NC) down the right-field line.
The Falcons’ four-run fourth started with a bases-loaded walk to Mike Green (Brandon, FL) before Lyon quickly followed by emptying the bases with his two-bagger to right-center to for a 7-1 advantage. A Yates RBI-single up the middle and Gray sacrifice fly in the eighth added two more for Pfeiffer late in the eighth.
Yates and Wade each led the Falcons with a pair of hits, along with catcher Tyler Smith (Locust, NC). Dula put together a 3-for-4 afternoon for Catawba in the loss. Austin Campbell (Charlotte, NC) notched the win in relief tossing two innings allowing three hits with a strikeout. Catawba starter John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC) suffered the loss tossing 3.2 innings allowing five runs on six hits.
Pfeiffer returns to Conference Carolinas action on Friday and Saturday hosting Erskine with game one at 2:30 p.m.
