March 12, 2011
DUE WEST, S.C. – Pfeiffer University and Erskine College split a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the EC Softball Complex. Pfeiffer moved to 7-0 in league play with a 3-1 victory in game one before suffering their first loss as Erskine pulled out a 6-4 win in the finale. Pfeiffer improves to 12-12 overall, 7-1 in league play while the Lady Fleet scoot to 9-6-1, 2-2.
In the opener, Melanie Conklin continued her impressive season in the circle going the distance allowing just one run on five hits with 10 more strikeouts. She also helped herself out at the plate with a 2-for-4 game one with a RBI and stolen base.
A little small ball in the top of the third put the Lady Falcons on top 1-0 as a pair of leadoff walks to Sam Taylor and Amber Johnson began the frame. After Andrea Wagner put down a successful sacrifice bunt, Conklin singled to bring home Taylor with the game’s first run.
In the sixth, Pfeiffer added two more on RBI-singles from Sarah Waylock and Kirsten Patterson. Wagner scored on Waylock’s base hit after leading off with a single while Hannah Jackson plated on Patterson’s hit reaching on a one-out double. Erskine scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out double.
In game two, four Lady Falcon errors helped the Lady Fleet grab a split in the Saturday twinbill. After two in the first and one in the second, Pfeiffer got on the board with two in the third to make it a one-run game. Waylock brought home the first run with an RBI-double while an Allison Braswell groundout made it 3-2.
After three more Erskine runs in the fourth, Pfeiffer added two more in the fifth on a sac-fly from Conklin while Waylock delivered with another RBI-single. Waylock paced the Lady Falcons with a 2-for-3 game two with a pair of RBI and run scored.
Pfeiffer returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon hosting Lander in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
