Lyon and Yates Collect Two Hits Each in Baseball's 7-4 Loss at #21 Catawba

Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. - Garrett Furrís (Gold Hill, NC) two-out, three-run single provided the difference as 21st-ranked Catawba grabbed a 7-4 win over visiting Pfeiffer in baseball action on Wednesday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 20-5 overall and win for the sixth straight time. The Falcons fall to 13-15.

Furrís eighth-inning single came on a high fly into right center that just eluded the diving Falcon outfielders and cleared the bases. Catawba started the winning rally on a one-out, pinch-hit single by John Neese (Summerfield, NC) which was followed by a double from Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC). After a strikeout and an intentional walk to Chris Dula (Troutman, NC), Furr delivered the game-winning hit.

Dula had put Catawba on top 4-2 on a three-run homer with two outs in the sixth. The Falcons battled back to tie the game on a two-out, two-run homer from Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) in the top of the eighth.

Pfeiffer got the gameís initial run in the third on a pair of Catawba errors. Blake Houtsonís (Mt. Ulla, NC) sacrifice fly tied the game in the fifth before Pfeiffer reclaimed the lead on two-out double by Lyon in the sixth.

Clay Walton (Lexington, NC) got the win for Catawba in relief after surrendering the game-tying homer in the eighth. Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC) picked up his second save as he tossed a perfect ninth inning.

John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC) started for Catawba and pitched six innings without a decision. He allowed just three hits and fanned five. Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC) returned to action for the first time this season following pre-season surgery and tossed a hitless inning. He was the 2010 South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC), who started for Pfeiffer, also failed to earn a decision. He went six innings, allowing four runs off five hits and struck out six. Wilhem took the loss in relief. Lyon had two hits and two RBI for the Falcons, while Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) had two hits and scored twice.

Dula drove in three runs and scored three times for Catawba. Furr and Ryan Bostion (Kannapolis, NC) each collected a pair of hits.
